Preparations are in full swing in Ngong, Kajiado North, ahead of this year’s International Adult Literacy Day, which will be celebrated on September 8.

The annual event, established by UNESCO in 1967, aims to raise global awareness about the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable societies.

Speaking to the press, Monicah Naisenya, the Adult Education Officer for Kajiado North, confirmed that this year’s county-level celebrations will be hosted in Ngong and will feature the graduation of hundreds of adult learners.

“We are proud to announce that around 300 adult learners will be graduating during this year’s event,” said Naisenya. “This is a significant achievement, and we encourage the local community to come out in large numbers and celebrate with us.”

Naisenya emphasized that the celebration is not only a recognition of learners’ hard work but also a platform to spotlight ongoing efforts to boost adult education in the region.

“Literacy empowers individuals and strengthens communities,” she said. “By supporting adult education, we’re opening doors to better livelihoods, greater participation in society, and improved quality of life.”

International Literacy Day activities often include exhibitions, storytelling sessions, cultural performances, and speeches from education stakeholders, all aimed at promoting inclusive access to learning—especially for marginalized adults.

Local officials say the event will also serve as a platform to engage residents in conversations around improving literacy programs and identifying barriers that continue to hinder adult access to education.

“This is more than just a graduation—it’s a call to action,” Naisenya added. “We must continue working together to ensure every adult has the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society.”

With literacy playing a key role in breaking cycles of poverty and driving community development, stakeholders hope that this year’s celebration will reinvigorate local efforts to build a more literate and empowered population in Kajiado County.
