West Pokot Senator calls for fair pay for local ECDE teachers

West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor has asked the West Pokot County government to grant local ECD teachers fair pay.

Murgor who has come to the defense of ECDE teachers in the County said their concerns and complaints are genuine.

He called on the County Government led by Governor Simon Kachapin to address the issues of remuneration affecting the pre-school teachers.

Speaking during a farewell ceremony for long-serving West Pokot CSO, Nelson Musani, Murgor said currently, ECDE teachers’ salaries vary across counties, with some earning as low as Ksh7,836 per month for the lowest cadre. Here’s a breakdown of their salary structure:

ECDE Teacher III (Certificate) Minimum salary of Ksh 7,836 and maximum of Ksh 8,717

Senior ECDE Teacher I (Diploma) Minimum salary of Ksh 15,224 and maximum of Ksh 19,090

He said some counties have proposed higher salaries, such Kilifi County Ksh 24,000 for certificate holders and Ksh 35,000 for diploma holders while

West Pokot County Proposed salary adjustments to Ksh 23,700 for certificate holders and Ksh 26,900 for diploma holders, with degree holders earning Ksh 39,700

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has been working to review and upgrade ECDE teachers’ salary scales. However, there’s an ongoing debate about the proposed salaries, with some counties implementing the new scheme of service while others appear not ready to comply

To address the issue, the Council of Governors recently agreed to implement ECDE schemes of service harmonizing salaries and allocating more resources for implementation

Due to the proposal some areas additional resources and as such Counties like Busia have moved all the ECDE teachers to permanent and pensionable terms, enhancing their benefits

The lawmaker also urged county government to follow suit and consider factors like hardship allowance.

He said that the Cost of living for ECDE teachers’ salaries should reflect the current economic realities and not otherwise.

“All Governors and County Executive Committee members have to be sensitive to the plight of these teachers. They have families and needs just like any other person,” posed West Pokot Senator.
