Chakama horror: eight children feared dead as cult probe deepens

A chilling investigation into suspected cult activities in Chakama, Kilifi County has taken a tragic turn, with eight children now feared dead.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its probe following the discovery of bodies at a secluded homestead, prompting a Malindi court to authorize exhumations.

Forensic experts have identified four suspected shallow graves at the site, raising fears that more victims may be buried within the compound. Residents have been urged to report any suspicious locations as investigators comb through the area.

One of the bodies recovered has been identified as Samwel Owino Okello Owuoyo, originally from Ndhiwa in Homa Bay County but residing in Busia. His brother, Paul Otieno, confirmed the identification, linking the case to a disappearance reported earlier this month.

“Samwel vanished during the school mid-term break with his two sons, leaving behind two daughters. He lied to his wife that he was heading to Ndhiwa for work,” Otieno told one of the local dailies.

In a related twist, a couple reported missing in Siaya County was rescued from the same Chakama compound. However, their six children remain unaccounted for and are feared to be among the victims.

Four vulnerable individuals rescued from the homestead have since been discharged from Malindi Sub-County Hospital and are currently in police custody for further protection and questioning.

The unfolding tragedy has sparked national concern, with authorities racing against time to uncover the full extent of the cult’s activities.

This recent development comes just two years after the infamous Shakahola massacre which was linked to a cult managed by the controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie
