Grade one pupil drowns in a pond in Busia

A sombre mood engulfed Kadeki B village in Nasewa location, Matayos constituency in Busia county Friday evening after a grade one pupil died after falling in a pond full of water.

The six year old boy Emmanuel Wanjala was heading home from school which is one kilometers from their home when he fell in the pond and died.

According to Eunice Ouma is his step mother, she received a report from children, who came running into her home saying that Emmanuel had died. She rushed to the scene and found his body had already been retrieved from the pond.”

“I was at home watching television when I was called by some children that their colleague had fallen in water. When I reached at the pond, I saw a school bag and shoes floating on water. I then called a neighbor who was excavating stones nearby and told him to enter the pond where he managed to retrieve the body,” states Anzelimo Ojiambo who was among first responders.

They joined hands with the area village elder Violet Nyongesa to appeal to those who excavate murram in the area to ensure they fill up the ponds afterwards to avert such deaths in future

“The pond was created by a contractor who excavated murram and left it like that. We request that such ponds be filled up so that they don’t cause such deaths.”
