Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, (KUPPET) Kisii branch has said teachers will down their tools during the reopening of the third term if the government would not have remitted capitation funds to school.
Kisii County KUPPET executive Secretary Joseph Abincha while addressing parents and teachers at Hema Chitago during Education Day, said the ministry of education has exposed principal to pressure as they run up and down to manage their schools with empty hands.
“Most principals have become fugitives of the suppliers and support staff. They keep on dogging them for unpaid debts.” He said.
The unionist asked the Cabinet Secretary, (CS) for education Julius Ogamba to put his house in order by harmonizing with his finance counterpart John Mbadi on how to disburse funds to schools without delays that disrupt the smooth running of schools.

“We could be forced to order good principals to close schools earlier this term to avoid further financial strains, but because we are also parents who don’t want to be unfair to our children, we have requested them to persevere for these remaining two weeks to close schools peacefully and wait for our serious reaction if the money could not have been released early next in the third term.” He said.
Concerning the Social Health Authority (SHA) Funds, Abincha took a swipe at the government for requiring teachers to pay the insurance funds for the whole year in order to get health services in hospitals.
He asked the CS for Health Aden Duale to allow teachers to remit the money in installments because they have other financial obligations to their families and other dependants.

“We like the insurance because it caters for our lives but let the CS for health clarify it regulations on our teachers whose pockets are already drained by the ongoing economic stresses in the country.” He said.
He said that KUPPET will continue safeguarding the welfare of its members and asked teachers to adhere to their teaching professional ethics to enable the Union protect them with confidence whenever they encountered any unforeseen social or financial predicament.
He expressed his satisfaction of the ongoing games and sports for both Junior and Senior Secondary schools and asked teachers to continue with the same pace as extra curriculum activities enable the learners to grow and develop holistically.
