Government allocates Ksh600 Billion to improve education sector, says CS Mvurya

Youth Affairs and Sports Cabinet Secretary, (CS) Salim Mvurya has announced that the government has allocated Ksh600 billion to bolster the education sector across the country.

Speaking during the official commissioning of a new dormitory at Moyeni Girls Secondary School in Kinango, Kwale County, Mvurya said the funds will be used to enhance the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), improve infrastructure, and hire more teachers.

“The government is committed to transforming the education system to ensure that learners not only gain knowledge but also practical skills that are relevant in the job market,” said Mvurya.

He noted that quality education is a critical pillar in national development and the foundation for producing responsible and innovative citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth.

Mvurya reiterated the government’s pledge to ensure that every child in Kenya, regardless of their background, has access to a conducive learning environment.

He said the money will be directed to building more classrooms, laboratories, and dormitories across the country.

Mvurya further praised the Kenya Kwanza administration for making significant progress in the education sector within a short period, adding that the the government has undertaken various reforms to strengthen the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), improve infrastructure, and address staffing challenges in schools.

He admitted that the CBC faced a few challenges in its early stages, but under the able leadership of President William Ruto, the system has now been streamlined and is operating more efficiently.

He noted that the government is not only focused on infrastructure development but is also prioritizing human resource capacity by planning to recruit 100,000 teachers by January next year.

“Since last year, we’ve employed about 76,000 teachers. By 2026, an additional 24,000 teachers will be hired to meet the growing demand and improve the quality of learning,” said Mvurya.

The CS said that the massive teacher recruitment drive is aimed at bridging the teacher shortage gap and ensuring effective delivery of the CBC.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga, also echoed Mvurya words, urging parents across the country to make their children’s education a top priority, noting that the national government is fully committed to supporting learners from primary all the way to university level.

Chidzuga said education is one of the key pillars of President Ruto’s administration, which has rolled out sponsorship programs to ensure no child is left behind due to financial constraints.

“Your children’s education should come first. President William Ruto has prioritized education and ensured there’s government sponsorship up to university level. Let’s take advantage of that and secure our children’s future,” she said.

She called on parents and guardians to take education seriously, adding that government investments in bursaries, capitation, and higher education loans are aimed at empowering the youth and breaking the cycle of poverty.
