In the heart of Machakos County, Kathiani High School is proving that innovation and self-reliance can transform lives, even with something as humble as pig farming.
What started as a simple initiative to manage food waste has grown into a life-changing project supporting needy students.

The school, under the leadership of Principal Joseph Katutu, launched a pig rearing project to consume leftover food from the school kitchen.
But what was initially seen as a waste management solution has now turned into a powerful tool for supporting education.
On Friday during the Annual General Meeting, the school disbursed bursaries worth Ksh 70,000 to less fortunate students, all funded from proceeds made from the sale of pork.

Each of the 28 students received Ksh 2,500,an amount that, for many families, goes a long way toward keeping a child in school.
“This was a Board of Management (BOM)-initiated project meant to address waste,” said Katutu. “But today, it’s putting a smile on the faces of our students. This is just the beginning, the future is even brighter.”
The project now has an outlet at Kathiani Market where pork is sold to the local community.
Even pig waste is put to good use, with materials from the muthokoi-fed pigs turned into compost, further benefiting the school’s agricultural efforts.
