Murang’a County witnessed a milestone as over hundred youth graduated under the transformative Murang’a Youth Service (MYS) programme, an initiative spearheaded by Governor Irungu Kang’ata.

The graduates, drawn from across Murang’a’s 35 wards, had spent months engaged in a unique blend of paid community service and free vocational training fully sponsored by the county government. They leave the programme armed with practical skills, certificates, and a startup grant of KSh 15,000 — with 20% earmarked directly for their parents.

“This is how we tackle youth unemployment, restore dignity, and build communities,” Governor Kang’ata remarked. . Leaders including Senator Joe Nyutu, MPs Babu Owino, Salasya, Mwenje, graced the colorful event, underscoring national interest in Murang’a’s homegrown solution.

Salasya used the event to encourage other governors to follow suit and find homegrown solutions instead of whining. He took a swipe at his Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya who recently said most of those from his community were being employed as maids and watchmen.

“I want to thank Dr Irungu kang’ata for taking up the responsibilities of reducing watchmen, maids and grave diggers in his county. Leadership is not about complaining throughout, apart from lamenting as a leader what have you done in youths empowerment programme in your county with the limited resources at your disposal,” Salasya said

The Murang’a Youth Service was launched in October 2023 under the Murang’a County Youth Service Policy to combat joblessness and social vices. Since then, over 5,200 youths have been recruited , undergoing rigorous community work — from urban cleaning to tree planting — before proceeding to three months of tuition-free training at local TVETs.
