Students of Bishop Okude Aburi Secondary School in Teso South, Busia County, have staged a demonstration at the sub-county TSC offices, demanding the deployment of a school principal to their school.

The agitated learners walked for over ten kilometres from their school to the Teso South Sub-County TSC offices at Alupe, carrying placards that demanded they be given a principal.

According to the students of the young school, the school has been operating without a principal for the last four years. “Today we have come here so that the TSC gives us a principal because for the last four years the school has been operating without one,” they stated.

They added that most of the teachers in the school are not employed by TSC, demanding that more teachers be added. “We are being taught by form four leavers who are waiting to join university and college, and this has affected our academics.”

Their grievances were supported by Amukura West ward MCA Dr Boniface Erute, who regretted that it had taken four years for TSC to deploy a principal in the school. “It’s saddening that a school can operate for four years without a principal. How do you expect the students to perform? They have also stated that most of the teachers in the school are not from the TSC and are awaiting university admission. I call upon TSC to do the necessary and send enough teachers to that school.”

They were addressed by TSC officers who assured them that a principal would be posted to the school in a week’s time.

According to TSC, the school has been unable to appoint a principal because it didn’t have an IPPD (Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database) number, which has now been generated.

The students, however, vowed to continue demonstrating at the offices if TSC does not honour the pledge.
