Students urged to join WCK to support conservation

Conservation Secretary, State Department for Wildlife Dr John Chumo has urged students to support conservation by forming wildlife clubs under Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK).

Dr Chumo who was speaking during tree planting and conservation education awareness by WCK in Nakeel High School, Kajiado North Sub County said the wildlife clubs will support nature conservation and management.

The department also donated trees and water tanks to the school as a way of supporting conservation work.

Dr Chumo added that they are targeting all schools to have clubs to support in mitigating climate.

“When students start learning and appreciating wildlife conservation we are going to see the future of this country being bright,” he said.

The director said the government is involving students as early as primary school and secondary so that they can receive education and awareness program on conservation.

He said the department targeted Nakeel School since the area has suffered from human wildlife conflicts; adding that wildlife education awareness is among solutions to reduce cases of human wildlife conflicts.

The School board chair Noah Kimpat said the awareness will contribute a lot to conservation as the students who are mostly from the pastoralist communities will protect the wildlife.

The School principal Kennedy Mwaniki said the management is ready to support such initiative that will lead to increase of conservation work and contribute to the growth of the country’s economy besides creating employment for the youth when they are out of school.

According to Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Wildlife and its associated tourism industry contribute over 10% to Kenya’s GDP; this is the reason the government has come up with initiatives that support conservation.

Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK) is open to individuals who are passionate about nature, education, and community development. Some of its work include spreading interest, skills and knowledge about wildlife, environment and natural resources in Kenya and East Africa through conservation education.
