The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has begun piloting a proposed lesson observation tool aimed at enhancing interaction of tutors during the learning process across various levels of learning institutions in the country.
The proposed document was launched in the selected counties, with teachers required to conduct real classroom observations and provide feedback to the commission through a structured online questionnaire platform.
While launching the exercise in Kitale, Trans Nzoia, the commission’s ICT Integration officer, Ronald Kibet, said the document aims to provide teachers with the opportunity to peer observe themselves, moving away from the traditional method where school administrators were responsible for conducting lesson observations in their respective schools.

Kibet said the commission developed the changes specifically to capture the competencies demonstrated by tutors and learners during learning, by competence-based education.
We would like to ask that the selected schools participate in this exercise honestly, as the outcome will inform the final document.
“The commission is looking forward to coming up with an interactive observation tool. We call upon educators in this process to be honest and candid in their response”, he said.
The proposed competencies to be observed in the new document include teacher professional competencies, learner competencies in the learning process, management of the teaching and learning environment, and assessment feedback.
Lesson observation is enshrined in the teacher professional assessment and development developed in 2018 with teachers required to be assessed at least once in a term.
Selected schools in Trans nzoia and West Pokot counties were earmarked for the piloting exercise in the Rift Valley region.
