Over 3,000 teachers from Kisumu County are set to benefit from a mental health wellness initiative during the upcoming Teachers’ Fun Day on August 22, 2025, at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground. The event, sponsored by the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) in partnership with the Safaricom Foundation, aims to promote mental well-being and resilience among educators from Early Childhood Development (ECD), Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), Primary, and Secondary Schools (SSS).
In recent years, the teaching profession has faced increasing pressures that can adversely affect mental health and well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic, changing educational policies, and socio-economic challenges have compounded the stress educators experience daily. Teachers often bear the emotional burden of their students’ struggles while navigating their own personal and professional challenges. Recognizing and addressing these mental health issues is imperative for fostering a healthy, effective educational environment.

The Kisumu County Teachers Fun Day will serve multiple purposes, all aimed at promoting mental health awareness and wellness among educators. First and foremost, it provides a platform for teachers to come together, share experiences, and build a supportive community. This mutual support is vital, as it can alleviate feelings of isolation and encourage open discussions about mental health challenges.
Furthermore, the event will feature workshops, seminars, and activities focused on mental health education and self-care strategies. Expert speakers will share insights on coping mechanisms, stress management, and the importance of mental well-being in the workplace. These resources will empower teachers to recognize the signs of mental distress, both in themselves and their colleagues, and to seek help when needed.
Another key aspect of this event is its focus on holistic wellness, encompassing not just mental health, but also physical wellness and social connectivity. By engaging in recreational activities, teachers can unwind, strengthen their networks, and cultivate a sense of camaraderie, all of which are essential for overall well-being.
