Syongila Vocational Training Centre in Kitui Central, Kitui County, was lauded for its exemplary leadership during this year’s Parents Day held on Friday, July 4, 2025.
Stakeholders, including parents, board members and local officials praised the institution’s management for its commitment to providing quality technical education and fostering a culture of discipline and excellence.
Established in 1979, Syongila Vocational Training Centre is one of over 50 polytechnics in Kitui County, which boasts the highest number of youth polytechnics in Kenya.
It offers :Tailoring and Dress Making, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Installation, ICT (computer lessons), Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy, Welding, Masonry, Motor-vehicle Mechanics and Plumbing courses.
There are approximately 800 youth polytechnics in Kenya. The youth polytechnics were started in Kenya in 1968 by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to address youth unemployment and provide vocational training to the school leavers.
The Kitui County Training Officer, Hassan Charo, the chief guest at the function , represented the Kitui County Education, Training and Skills Development Minister Joyce Kasyoka Masila.
Addressing the function, the chief guest talked about the meaning, importance and values of the vocational training centres.
“Our lessons are 90 percent practice.The 10 percent is theory. Any person can join the vocational training centre and choose a course. We do not segregate people. The opportunity is there ,the decision is yours! We also offer career guidance to students, so take advantage of the system.” Charo said regarding the vocational training.

He said they will continue increasing the number of vocational training centre instructors to enhance the delivery of technical skills.
“We have a plan to renovate this institution next year,” Charo added.
Addressing the parents day event, Syongila VTC manager, Lance Kai Gari disclosed that currently the learning institution has a population of 160 students ,a total of ten teaching staff and four subordinate staff.
“Let me offer my sincere gratitude to parents for attending this function,” he remarked. “I also thank you for paying school fees for your children diligently,” he added.
The manager also announced that they will hold a graduation ceremony for the institution’s 2022, 2023 and 2024 students on July 23, 2025.
The institution’s Board of Governance Chairperson, Margaret Kitonga also addressed the occasion where she also highly appreciated parents for having attended the event.

Duncan Kilonzo, the Treasurer of Syongila Vocational Training Centre, who also addressed the event, sincerely thanked the parents for enrolling their children at the institution.
“Because it is my area, I want to assure you that your money is safe. And the school is getting quality education. This institution is one of the best in this county,” Kilonzo said.
“This education is transformative. Let us all work together to ensure that Syongila Vocational Training Centre not only exists but continues to thrive,” he added.
Kaveta Area Assistant Chief, Thomas Yunzu Mwolyo ,also addressed the occasion among others.
