KUPPET Kisumu questions sport officials’ credibility over numerous complains

Teachers’ Union officials from Kisumu County have now questioned the credible of sports officials within the area following continuous complaints from coaches and referees alongside principals during term schools.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers’ executive secretary, Kisumu County Zablon Awange declared that it was time the entire sports office was disbanded.

Speaking in Kisumu, Awange said many schools expressed that many players who are not bona fide players were allowed to take part in the event.

He said the presence of many foreign students denied local players a chance to showcase their talent, callig for a clean games where age and eligibility is taken into account.

The official said many coaches who spend a lot of time training were now discouraged.

Awange said many teams which played against Onjiko high lodged several complaints but the jury ignored their plea.

He lauded Kisumu Boys High school senior principal, Austin Muma for moving to court in order to contest the authenticity of the Onjiko Boys high school soccer team with success.

Onjiko Boys High School football team has been banned for three years for fielding six ineligible players against Kisumu Boys (KB) during the Kisumu County Secondary Schools Ball Games, a decision that derails the replay of the county’s boys football final, leaving it hanging in the balance.

The school’s football team was handed the ban, after thorough investigations, ordered by the supreme jury of Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association (KCSSSA), prompted by a petition by Kisumu Boys against Onjiko Boys,  confirmed the school’s team had fielded six ineligible players against KB, during the two teams county group stage match.

It was established  that Onjiko Boys high school‘s football team, fielded six ineligible players against the KB side, during the year 2025 Kisumu county secondary schools, ball games..

Kisumu county education director Rosemary Birenge said her office found out that Onjiko Boys High School violated the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) constitution and the KCSSSA rules of the tournament- rule number 11.

Birenge continued to state, “in line with the provisions in the KSSSA constitution section 17. Article (iii), (iv) and (vii), Onjiko Boys High School football team is consequently banned from participating in KSSSA games for 3 years, effective from June 25, 2025.”

She said the import of the decision by the KCSSSA jury,  banning Onjiko Boys, implies all earlier Kisumu county secondary schools ball games,  boys football semi-final matches, that were played before the schools’ half-term break, late last month on June 21, are now null and

Awange declared that members of the teaching fraternity are calling for the resignation of the entire sports office, stating that coaches and referees allegedly signed for cash they are now paid, adding that referees sign for 100,000/- only to be paid 70,000/-.

Awange said budgets for sports are a closely guarded secret adding that schools should know the full details.

The official said students and coaches feed on sodas and half loaves yet schools part with huge amounts of cash.

On a number of occasions, Awange said, the ministry harasses schools heads to pay for activity yet the same is not reimbursed when it is finally paid by the government.

He called for an audit of sports funds noting that most of them leave in opulence.

“Fan days organized for teachers are uncalled for since they can organize for the same on their own. Many coaches and students spend the night in school buses yet they have paid a lot of money,” Awange lamented.

Awange said some schools which reached the regional level through the county level have been locked out after spots officials allowed them to proceed amidst irregularities.
