Parents of pupils learning at Makutano Primary School located in Kapenguria division, West Pokot County, held a peaceful demonstration on July 3, demanding the immediate transfer of the school’s head teacher. The protest took place at the school compound and involved dozens of parents who expressed dissatisfaction with the head teacher’s leadership.

The main concerns raised by the protesting parents centered on the head teacher’s conduct and what they described as a breakdown in communication between the school administration and the community. According to the parents, efforts to raise their concerns through formal meetings and school forums had been unsuccessful.

During the protest, learning was briefly disrupted as parents occupied the school grounds to present their grievances. They carried placards and organized themselves in groups to deliver a formal petition to local education officials.

The petition asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to intervene and take disciplinary or administrative action.

The parents stated that their frustration had grown over time due to what they termed as neglect of their views in school decision-making. They also mentioned challenges in coordination between the head teacher and the teaching staff, which they believe is affecting the school’s general environment and performance.

Education officials at the sub-county level acknowledged receipt of the parents’ petition and promised to forward the matter to the relevant authorities for review.

School activities resumed after the demonstration, but tension remains high as parents await a formal response. The school’s Board of Management is expected to meet with education officers to assess the situation and determine the way forward.
