Business in Bomet town was paralyzed after students from Sot Technical Institute took to the streets to protest rising insecurity, which they say has endangered their lives and disrupted their studies.
The students, led by their leaders Dianah Cheptoo and Marceline Chelangat, marched for several kilometers to the County Commissioner’s office, demanding swift action from security agencies.
“We are tired of living in fear. The attackers are known to us and live near our institution,” said Cheptoo. “They roam freely armed with pangas and machetes, yet nothing is done. We have reported these cases several times, but no action has been taken.”
Chelangat echoed her sentiments, noting that the continued insecurity had instilled fear among students and affected their ability to attend classes freely.

“Many of us no longer feel safe walking to school or going about our daily routines. We are here to demand our right to safety,” she said.
The students accused local police officers of inaction and even collusion with criminals, saying their failure to act has only emboldened the perpetrators.
“The officers here have failed us. We are calling for their immediate transfer because we have lost trust in them,” added another student protester.

The demonstrations caused major disruptions in Bomet town, bringing business to a halt as the students chanted slogans and carried placards demanding justice and protection.
Efforts to get a comment from local security personnel were unsuccessful, as none could be reached by press time.
The students vowed to continue protesting until meaningful action is taken and their safety assured.
“We will not stop until something is done. We refuse to be silent victims,” declared Cheptoo
