The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the government to adopt local solutions to address the rising insecurity in the North Rift region, which has disrupted learning in several schools.
Speaking in Bomet, KNUT Bomet Executive Secretary Desmond Langat emphasised the need for homegrown strategies to restore lasting peace and ensure schools can operate safely.
“Insecurity has not only threatened lives but also crippled education in affected areas. Some schools are yet to reopen fully, and learners continue to suffer,” said Langat.
He called on national and county governments, community leaders, and security agencies to work together in crafting localised interventions tailored to the unique challenges facing the region.
“Security is key. As a Union, we are calling on national and county governments, community leaders, and security agencies to work together in crafting localised interventions tailored to the unique challenges facing the region,” added Langat
The union’s call comes amid growing concern over repeated attacks and displacement in parts of the North Rift, which have forced many pupils and teachers to flee their homes.

Langat expressed hope that incorporating community-driven solutions will help restore stability and allow normal learning activities to resume.
In May, KNUT and KUPPET withdrew their members from Kerio Valley following the killing of a Catholic priest.
John Cheberi, Knut Secretary for the Marakwet branch, and Paul Biwott, Kuppet Secretary in Elgeyo Marakwet County, said the situation has become too dangerous for teachers, especially non-locals, who they claim are now being deliberately targeted by armed criminals and bandits.
“We have decided to withdraw the teachers because of serious security concerns in the region,” said Cheberi. “Three non-local security officers have also been killed recently. It’s clear that this violence is not random.”
