Boards of Management (BoMs) of Catholic-sponsored schools recently gathered for a seminar aimed at sensitising them on their roles in the institutions they represent.

The event, organised by the Catholic Diocese of Kitale, brought together BoM members from various schools to deepen their understanding of effective school governance. The seminar was held from June 25 to 27.

The topics covered during the seminar included Self-Esteem, Managing Emotions, and Stress Management. The knowledge gained will be used to help learners cope with the challenges they face. Other areas addressed included The Needs and challenges facing learners, as well as their solutions, as well as hotspot areas surrounding schools—such as pubs, videos, and social media.

BoM members were also facilitated with sessions on the duties of the government, the roles of the sponsor, the role of parents and community, and the role of school alumni. At the end of the seminar, BoM members prepared an action plan and way forward to be implemented in their respective schools.

“Each BoM member is supposed to make his school a dream school for others to admire,” it was stated.

BoM members play a crucial role in their respective institutions of learning. It’s the BoM members who ensure that their institutions move and operate in the right direction. It’s the BoM members who ensure that the Ministry of Education policy is rightly implemented in the schools they represent. These include ensuring that the right curriculum and co-curricular activities are implemented in their schools.

In addition, it’s the BoM members who ensure that school activities run smoothly through high standards of discipline among the teaching staff, subordinate staff, and learners. Additionally, BoM members should have a vision for their schools, as positive development is the expectation of each parent.

The conducive learning environment in the school should be upheld and checked by the BoM. The security of learners and school properties should always be under the watch of the BoM through the Head of the Institution. BoM members should strive to make their institution a dream school where every parent would wish their child to be better off attending.

Madam Delphine Wachiyeh, the Education Secretary at the Catholic Diocese of Kitale, urged BoM members to fully implement what they had learned in their schools for the benefit of the learners.

Also present were Fr. James Ndombi, the Pastoral Coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Kitale, and Fr. Paul Sunguti, Assistant Secretary for Education of the Diocese.
