NITA, counties partner to advance skills acquisition via vocational training

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) is stepping up efforts to enhance vocational education reforms through a new partnership with all 47 county governments.

The collaboration, aimed at strengthening industrial skills development and certification, was formalized during a high-level forum at NITA’s Athi River Conference Centre on Monday, June 23, 2025.

The meeting which brought together NITA leadership and County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) for education from the counties, resulted in a shared commitment to harmonize national and county training strategies.

NITA acting director general Theresa Wasike confirmed that a detailed report outlining resolutions, proposed actions, and county feedback will be published by June 30, 2025.

“This collaboration opens the door for integrated growth in vocational education, grounded in local realities but aligned with national objectives,” Wasike said.

The partnership is expected to drive innovations in curriculum design, streamline Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedures, improve assessment and certification processes, and support the development and accreditation of training centers across counties.

NITA also plans to recommend Council of Governors (CoG) representation on the National Industrial Training Board to ensure county voices shape national policy.

To operationalize the collaboration, joint technical committees will be established in every county, serving as engines of coordination and delivery. NITA will also fast-track existing training requests and publish a county-level inventory of accredited programs and facilities.

Governors and education CECMs will be invited to the nationwide launch of the Trade Test initiative scheduled for August 2025. NITA expressed interest in replicating the forum annually to sustain momentum and track impact.

“By blending county-level insights with national oversight, we’re building a more responsive, accessible, and industry-aligned training system for all Kenyans,” added Wasike.

The initiative signals a shift toward a more decentralized, partnership-driven model of vocational training with potential to tackle unemployment and create pathways for lifelong learning
