Kaimosi University Optometry students boost vision at Kaptik Sec school

Kaimosi University Optometry students during eyecare outreach

Optometry students from Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) delivered vital eye care to students and staff at Kaptik Secondary School, conducting a comprehensive free eye screening and prescription eyeglasses distribution that impacted dozens.

The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Emmanuel Okenwa, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, saw 168 individuals screened and 38 fitted with free prescription glasses, offering a lifeline to those who have long struggled with undiagnosed or untreated vision impairments.

For many beneficiaries, this was their first-ever professional eye examination. Among them was Dennis, a Form 2 student, who shared a heartfelt reflection:

“I’ve been struggling to see the blackboard, but today, thanks to KAFU, I can see clearly again.” Said one of the teacher.

The outreach underscores the university’s commitment to community-based healthcare, blending academic excellence with compassionate service. By bringing clinical services directly to underserved populations, KAFU continues to close the gap in access to essential vision care in rural Kenya.

“This program isn’t just about correcting eyesight, it’s about changing futures,” remarked Dr. Okenwa. “Clear vision is foundational to learning and personal development. Our students are not just learning; they’re transforming lives.”

The event marks another milestone in KAFU’s ongoing vision health campaign, which aims to extend quality optometric services to marginalized regions.

The next outreach is scheduled for Kisasi Primary School in Shamakhokho Ward, Tiriki East, where the team will continue its mission to provide sight—and hope to those most in need.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, such grassroots efforts highlight the critical role of university-led outreach programs in strengthening public health infrastructure and empowering future medical professionals through real-world impact.
