Principals and Heads of Departments from 10 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Kericho County have undergone training on the newly introduced modularised curriculum.
Rift Valley Regional TVET Director Peter Cheruiyot emphasised the significance of the new approach, stating that it will help students achieve their career goals within a shorter timeframe.
Speaking during the training session, Cheruiyot noted that under the previous system, trainees had to wait up to three years to obtain certification.
“The shift will allow students to be more flexible, join the job market sooner, and continue with further learning without delay,” he stated.
He added that the implementation of the new system is already underway in most TVETs across the South Rift region, terming the development encouraging.
Kericho Township Technical and Vocational Training Institute Principal, Shaddrack Tonui, lauded the training and affirmed that both parents and students have received the curriculum positively.

“The modularised system breaks down courses into manageable units, ensuring that trainees are awarded certificates at every stage. This is especially beneficial for those who may not complete the full course,” said Tonui.
The training aims to equip institutional leaders with the skills necessary to effectively roll out the curriculum and align training with national goals for youth empowerment and employability.
A modularised Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum is a training approach where the curriculum is broken down into smaller, independent units called modules.
Each module focuses on specific skills or competencies, allowing learners to acquire skills in stages with multiple entry and exit points. This approach enhances flexibility, responsiveness, and inclusivity in vocational training, aligning it with industry needs and promoting lifelong learning.
