Women urged to tap public funds to support education, family welfare

Kisii County Woman Representative Doris Donya Aburi.

Kisii County Woman Representative, Dorice Donya Aburi, has urged women in registered self-help Groups to access public funds and invest in their spouses’ education to support their children and help them realise their potential.

Donya noted that the cost of living is high, noting that women need to help their husbands ease the burden of educating their children.

She said the government is channelling millions of public funds to counties and challenged officials of the Groups to apply for the funds to improve their lives.

“ We want the Groups to invest in viable projects as Groups or individuals, realise profits and expand their businesses to gain more,” Donya said during the economic empowerment program at Nyanturago mixed secondary school in Nyaribari Masaba constituency in the County.

The Member of Parliament appealed to women to seek training from government officers on how to save, invest, and manage their projects or businesses to generate profit and sustain them.

Women noted that the MP can share the profits and reinvest them in other businesses to boost family businesses and incomes, thereby benefiting them.

The MP said women are resilient, patient and group-oriented. They can contribute to their families’ incomes if they are supported with capital to start businesses,” Donya noted.

The lawmaker, who also donated a car wash machine to 45 Boda Boda Groups, one each in each of the county’s 45 wards, challenged them to use the machines to enhance their incomes and create jobs for other youths.

“ I urge the boda boda operators to diversify their activities and expand their businesses to be self-reliant”, the MP said, adding the operators can embrace zero grazing or rear chicken to boost their incomes.

Additionally, the Lawmaker challenged youths who never qualified to join universities to join technical and vocational Institutions to acquire skills to improve their lives.

She said youths who embrace technical skills can form Groups, seek public funds and start income-generating projects to earn a living.

The MP appealed to youths to develop positive attitudes towards technical and vocational education, adding that they can advance it to a higher level and exploit their full potential.
