The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has criticised the government for underfunding co-curricular activities, stating that the budget shortfall is negatively impacting school games.
Kuppet Busia County Secretary General Moffats Okisai says this has greatly affected school games with some sun counties organising their finals late, “We have had a lot of challenges, like in Teso North Sub County, which concluded their finals four days ago, just as county finals were about to start. And the challenge has been poor funding of co-curricular activities.”
Speaking on Thursday at Kamuriai Secondary School in Teso North during the start of the Kenya Secondary School Association’s Term 2A Busia County ball games, Okisai urged the government to, “Our appeal to the government is that as we are transitioning to the competence-based education, education should be given top priority.”

“If co-curricular activities are not allocated enough money, then that means the government is also fighting directly or indirectly against competence-based education,” he added.
He also uses the opportunity to urge teachers and coaches not to field unintelligible players and to encourage referees to officiate fairly.
“This is a student’s competition, let us not field unintelligible players, which will eventually attract appeals from other teams. And to our referees, our appeal is that they be very objective and not biased.”
In the opening matches, Kolanya Boys from Teso North started their campaign in soccer by beating Namboboto two goals to one at Kamuriai secondary school playing ground, before defending champions John Osogo Boys from Budalang’i hammered Kingandole from Butula three goals to one.
Mabunge RC from Nambale humbled Busibwabo from Matayos one goal to zero, while Kaliwa from Teso Central finished with a barren draw with Aterait from Teso South.
