Learners in Kenya are set to benefit from a major push in environmental education, thanks to a newly enhanced program by the Karura Forest Environmental education Trust (KFEET).
The program, which integrates Competency Based Education (CBE) principles, targets learners from early childhood development to tertiary institutions.
It combines classroom theory with experimental learning through guided forest walks, hands-on group projects, and interactive outdoor sessions all delivered within the scenic Karura Forest.
KFEET manager Julie Kimutat said the initiative is designed to deepen students’ understanding of conservation while nurturing responsibility and love for nature.

“The key focus for KFEET is fostering conservation and environmental awareness, a deep sense of appreciation for nature as well as offering practical hands-on-learning experiences for all learners” said kimutat.
“Every year we welcome thousands of learners interested in learning about the environment, the education sessions for CBE learners are carefully aligned with curriculum’s objective to ensure that the content covered is not only enhancing environmental awareness but is also linked with what is covered in school,” Kimutat added.

To ensure inclusivity, the Outreach Program supported by Friends of Karura Forest provides logistical support such as transport, learning materials, and meals for learners from disadvantaged schools. This effort aims to bridge the gap in environmental learning opportunities.
The expanded initiative comes at a time when global discussions around climate change and environmental sustainability are intensifying. By immersing learners in nature-based education, KFEET hopes to inspire a new generation of eco-conscious citizens. The program is offered free of charge to participating schools.
