Deputy Inspector General steps aside over teacher Ojwang’s death as investigations intensify

The Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud K. Lagat.

The Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud K. Lagat, has voluntarily stepped aside to allow for an impartial investigation into the custodial death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher whose demise has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for police accountability.

In an official statement released today, Lagat said his decision was driven by the need to uphold the integrity of the office and facilitate ongoing investigations into the incident.

“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities… I have today opted to step asidepending completion of investigations,” the statement read in part.

The late Ojwang, a teacher from Homa Bay County, died under controversial circumstances while in police custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi earlier this month. His death has ignited widespread condemnation from the public, civil society groups, teachers’ unions, and lawmakers, many of whom have called for independent investigations and justice for the slain educator.

While details surrounding Ojwang’s detention and death remain sketchy, a preliminary report indicated he was arrested following an altercation but later succumbed while still in custody — under conditions that have yet to be fully explained.

Lagat, a decorated officer holding national honours including CBS, OGW, and HSC, emphasised his willingness to cooperate with investigators.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me… and offer immense condolences to the family of Mr Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” he stated.

Until the investigations are concluded, the duties of the Deputy Inspector General will be performed by his deputy, as stated in the announcement.

Meanwhile, IPOA has confirmed it is conducting independent inquiries, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been tasked with compiling a comprehensive report on the incident.

Adding to the latest developments, Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Taalam is currently detained at Lang’ata Police Station until Wednesday, June 18, 2025, pending a court ruling on whether to grant the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) permission to hold him for 21 more days. IPOA says this period is necessary to complete investigations into Ojwang’s death.
