As Kenya intensifies its commitment to combating climate change, universities have been called upon to take a leading role in driving innovation and sustainability efforts.
Prof. Alice Njuguna, Zetech DVC, urged higher learning institutions to spearhead the climate change agenda by mainstreaming innovative solutions and research.
Speaking during the 7th Research and Innovation Week themed ‘Education for Sustainable Prosperity: Empowering Lives through Innovation’ Prof. Njuguna emphasized the urgency of embracing advanced technologies and innovative practices to address the devastating effects of climate change.

She noted that global warming has caused widespread suffering, including hunger, loss of life, and irregular rainfall patterns that threaten agriculture and water security.
“Universities must take the lead in generating and deploying solutions that address the climate crisis,” Prof. Njuguna said.
She highlighted the university’s ongoing efforts to foster climate-smart technologies, including the development of climate robotics by students.
The Research and Innovation Week event brought together key stakeholders including academics, innovators, researchers, policy makers, and leaders in the technology sector.

The forum served as a platform to showcase cutting-edge research and explore collaborative opportunities aimed at building a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
Prof. Njuguna stressed that universities must move beyond traditional learning and become hubs for transformative innovation that empowers communities and promotes environmental stewardship.
