The Ministry of Education (MoE) will launch a pilot phase of the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) in July 2025, signalling a major shift in how student data is managed nationwide.
Speaking on the development, Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang Bitok confirmed that the new platform will eventually replace the existing National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), which has been used since 2018.
According to PS Bitok, the new system has already created a comprehensive database for all learners in Kenya.
It will address key gaps identified in NEMIS, such as data accuracy, system integration challenges, and school-level usability.
“We are moving towards a more efficient and user-friendly platform that ensures every learner is properly captured and tracked throughout their education journey,” said Dr Bitok.

KEMIS is expected to offer improved features, including real-time data access for policy planning, integration with other national identification systems, and enhanced security protocols. The system will also support digital tracking of student transfers, school performance metrics, and funding disbursement tied to enrollment data.
The pilot phase will start in selected counties and institutions, with nationwide rollout following after necessary adjustments.
Education stakeholders, including teachers and school heads, are being trained before deployment.
