Stakeholders in Education sector have urged TSC to expedite financial management sessions to Junior School teachers to save them from an impending financial stress.

This has come as a result of a shocking spending behavior of some teachers immediately they received their permanent and pensionable terms salary early this year.

While responding to the Education news survey themed, “The financial behavior of the newly recruited teachers”, stakeholders from Western, Nyanza, Coast and Eastern regions, pointed out that there was a queer if not shocking behavior immediately the JS teachers received the famous white smoke.

A classic example is of a JS teacher from one of the sub counties in Nandi who declared before the rest of the teachers that his weekends must start on Thursdays after being confirmed to PNP status.

“It is true, the teacher rushed to the bank for a loan, bought a second hand car and started giving excuses on why he is away every Thursday and Friday.” said a colleague in the same school.

In another region, it is reported that JS teachers are regular chief guests in fundraisers competing with local politicians especially the MCAs.

One teacher is said to have secured a loan from a financial institution, shocked the gathering when he gave a donation of Ksh 20,000.

In a similar development in Western Kenya, a group of JS teachers agreed to buy cars immediately they were converted to permanent terms. Most of the teachers bought second hand vehicles which are said to have started giving them stress which is affecting their delivery in their lessons.

The vehicles are reported to be developing mechanical problems in turns. “Already our young brothers are stressed because of the steps they took after what they thought was a windfall,” said Rashid a teacher in Busia County.

The survey further revealed that, female teachers looked more organized in terms of managing their finances compared to their male counterparts. The report confirmed that despite some lady teachers requiring technical financial information, male teachers urgently require emancipation from mental health that has been attributed to financial impropriety.

TSC is advised to step up financial literacy skills which can be integrated in Timec module.

A case where a female JS teacher borrowed a loan and gave to his boyfriend who later disappeared is a stark reminder that something should urgently be done.
