Kakamega County is set to host a Mathematics Teachers Workshop on May 15, 2025, as part of efforts to address poor performance in mathematics at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) level.
The initiative, organized by the Ministry of Education through the Kakamega County Education Office in collaboration with the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), Kakamega Chapter, is aimed at equipping teachers with effective instructional strategies to improve learning outcomes in mathematics.
According to an official circular dated April 6, 2025, the workshop will commence at 8:30 a.m. and will be conducted simultaneously at three cluster venues: Maturu Secondary School, Kakamega High School, and St. Peter’s Mumias Boys High School. Each venue will cater to teachers from various sub-counties within Kakamega County.

This intervention comes in response to troubling statistics from the 2024 KCSE exams, where 12,193 out of 49,607 candidates scored a grade D-, and a further 18,442 obtained a grade E in mathematics.
County Director of Education, Helen Nyang’au, described the figures as alarming and emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for mathematics teachers to engage with subject experts, refine their teaching approaches, and collaborate on strategies to enhance student performance.
Maturu Secondary School will host teachers from Likuyani, Lugari, Matete, and Kakamega North. Kakamega High School will serve educators from Kakamega Central, South, East, and Navakholo. St. Peter’s Mumias Boys High School will cater to teachers from Butere, Khwisero, Matungu, Mumias West, and Mumias East.
School principals have been asked to facilitate teacher participation by arranging transportation and submitting a fee of Ksh 800 per teacher to cover meals, stationery, and certificates of participation.
