Trans Nzoia County has made a decisive stride toward expanding its higher education infrastructure through a strategic collaboration with Bells University of Technology in Nigeria.

The initiative marks the county’s most concrete move yet in its long-standing ambition to host a university within its borders.

In a high-level engagement held on May 5, a delegation from Bells University met with Trans Nzoia County leadership, including County Assembly Speaker Andrew Wanyonyi and the County Assembly’s Education Committee, chaired by Kapomboi MCA Kefa Were.

The meeting, described as both “constructive and visionary,” sought to chart a comprehensive roadmap for establishing the institution.

“This is a historic moment for Trans Nzoia,” said Speaker Wanyonyi. “Partnering with a reputable institution like Bells University underscores our commitment to providing quality, accessible tertiary education for our youth.”

Committee Chair Kefa Were echoed the sentiment, noting that the partnership would boost academic opportunities and catalyse socio-economic development in the region.

Were added that the feasibility studies, curriculum alignment, and campus infrastructure planning are among the next steps in the rollout. If successful, the venture will position Trans Nzoia as a hub for academic excellence in the North Rift region.

The collaboration signals a new chapter in regional education policy, reinforcing the county’s ambition to transform into a knowledge-driven economy.
