Shs. 1.6 bn set aside for training teachers on CBE

President William Ruto is received by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli upon his arrival at the 60th Labour Day celebrations held at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.

President William Ruto, during Labour Day Celebrations today, pointed out a substantial investment in Kenya’s education sector, unveiling a series of initiatives aimed at addressing teacher shortages, enhancing training, and promoting educators.

The government has allocated Ksh 2.4 billion to recruit 20,000 intern teachers starting January 2026. This will bridge the teacher-learner ratio gap, particularly in underserved rural and informal urban areas, ensuring broader access to quality education.

In addition, Ksh 1.6 billion has been earmarked for training teachers, focusing on the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework. This training will equip educators with modern teaching methodologies, emphasising practical skills and real-world application.

To motivate and retain experienced educators, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been allocated Ksh 1 billion to promote at least 20,000 teachers to higher job groups in the 2025–2026 Financial Year.

As the implementation of this plan unfolds, the TSC and other relevant bodies will need to ensure transparency and efficiency in the recruitment and promotion processes.
