County Commissioner John Korir has announced that over 90 per cent of Elgeyo Marakwet County students have returned to school as the new term begins.

Korir said security agencies had been deployed to ensure a peaceful learning environment, particularly in areas previously affected by banditry and cattle rustling.

“We have beefed up security in all vulnerable zones. Our officers are on the ground to ensure learners and teachers are safe,” said Korir.

Speaking during a tour of several schools in Tot and Arror areas, he urged parents to take advantage of the improved security and ensure no child is left behind this term.

“Education is a right, and every child must be in school. Parents must play their part by sending their children to class every day,” he added.

While expressing satisfaction with the improved security, parents called on the national government to ensure the timely release of capitation funds, warning that delays had previously disrupted learning and strained school resources.

“Teachers are doing their best, but schools cannot run on empty accounts. The government must act quickly to release funds,” said Naomi Chebet, a parent from Marakwet East.

“We don’t want a situation where students are sent home again for lack of learning materials or food,” added David Kiplagat, another parent from Sambirir.

Education officials in the county say they are optimistic that the ongoing multi-agency security operations will create a stable academic calendar this year, especially in previously hard-hit regions.

“With over 90 per cent attendance already, we are hopeful this will be one of the most successful terms in recent years. This is very encouraging,” said Anne Tanui, an education officer in the region.
