Ministry to track 374 Scholarship beneficiaries who dropped out of school

The Ministry of Education, (MoE) has vowed to ensure that 374 Scholarship beneficiaries who dropped out of school are enrolled back as schools open this week.

Speaking in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps in Turkana County after conducting a one-week mop exercise, County Director of Education; Turkana County Dr. Henry Lubanga confirmed that there are many learners who are have dropped out of school in the refugee camps.

Lubanga said the government will spare no effort in tracing the learners and return them back to school as term two learning programme kicks off.

The scholarship beneficiaries are out of school due to various challenges which include teenage pregnancies, early marriages, truancy and resettlements in other countries.

The education officers said learners in the camp faces many challenges but insisted that the challenges could not be an excuse to let the learners drop out of school.

National Coordinator of Kenya primary education equity in learning programme (KPEEL)Martha Ekirapa confirmed that out of the 374 Elimu scholars, 330 are from Equity Group Foundation while 44 of are from Jomo Kenyatta Foundation who are the scholarship implementing partners.

She dismissed some of the challenges causing disruption of learning for the students as mere excuses that are not supported by the ministry’s regulations and guidelines.

The coordinator outlined several interventions that the ministry of education has put in place to counter some of the challenges that include learners who are pregnant allowed to be in school until the time of delivery and they can also resume learning soon after as per the ministry Education learner’s re-entry policy.
