Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo has assured bright and disciplined students from poor homes of financial support until they complete their education.
He said that society can only live peacefully and equitably by equipping its youth with weapons, not those of war, but of quality education for self-sufficiency and the rest of the world.
“We live in a world where land, as the main source of wealth, keeps on fishing. Therefore, we must find ways of replenishing this wealth by investing in our children through sustainable education, ” he said.
The governor addressed more than 235 students out of the 751 continuing secondary school learners under the Governor’s Scholarship.
Nyaribo said he started the scholarship from his pocket after witnessing many qualified students from the county fail to continue their education because of a lack of money. The majority of them are total orphans or have both parents, but come from very needy home backgrounds.
“I was touched with compassion when I saw some separate students commit suicide because of a lack of fees, and I chose to step in as a parent and leader,” he said.

The governor, who spoke at Nyambaria National School, said that he offered scholarships to 751 students set to sit for their KCSE examinations and asked them to work hard to enable them to secure scholarships from his office through their university.
He said his office picked the 235 to mentor them and add more skills because they exhibited exceptional performance in their internal examinations.
The governor said that those selected would be group leaders of their colleagues after they complete university. They will join hands and pool resources to form the Nyamira County education fund.
“We must teach our children to be good financially afterwards to enable them to be keepers of their brothers,” he said.
The governor expressed optimism about the scholarship’s viability, arguing that its beneficiaries will be motivated to form a financial academy after completing their courses.
Commenting on the political wrangles rocking Nyamira County, the governor appealed for amicable dialogue to enable the two antagonistic groups of Nyamira to work together.
“I would like to remind the MCAS that we were not elected into office by Nyamira to compete over trivial matters but to work with zeal and complete the heavy task ahead by forging unity, which is requisite for any success,” he said.
The governor highlighted his government’s successes in the last two years, ranging from confirmation and permanent employment of ECDE teachers, construction of enough ECDE classrooms, provision of fortified porridge to ECDE learners and improvements of roads for easy accessibility to schools, hospitals and market centres to be more accomplished through teamwork.
