Kiambu pupils to get free milk, loaves of bread

Kiambu County Government plans to give lower primary pupils free packets of milk and two loaves of bread daily.
While addressing a church congregation at Macedonia PCEA in Juja Sub-county, Governor Ferdinand Waititu said that apart from improving the health of pupils, the initiative will enhance dairy farming.
Governor Waititu said that dairy markets will be readily available and farmers will be encouraged to farm without fears of unstable markets.
Waititu said that the programme will only benefit pupils in public primary schools.
The county boss said that unemployed women would be provided with bakery equipment to make bread which they will be expected to sell to the county government for pupils’ consumption.
“Making of bread is a simple process and only requires flour and water. By equipping women with bakery equipment, we are committed to empower residents for their transformation as we also strive to better infrastructure,” added Governor Waititu.
He said that enrollment in schools is also expected to increase as a result of the daily programme which he said his administration had enough funds to facilitate.
“We also aim to ensure our school structures are decent to ensure that pupils learn from a comfortable environment,” he added.
Waititu asked women to enroll for tailoring courses in Kiambu polytechnics at subsidized costs to benefit from mass production of school uniforms.
Theta Ward Representative Simon Kuria said that the initiative will revive dairy farming in the area.
Deputy Governor James Nyoro dismissed claims that the two leaders were at loggerheads saying: “We don’t have time to fight. We are short of time to disagree. The only time we have is to serve the people of Kiambu.”
