Kisii-based preacher Charles Isaboke has decried the high rate of wandering children in Kisii County.

He said that most of them are school dropouts who, because of negligence in parental care, now have a big influence in luring their friends at home during this holiday to join them in the streets.

“Some of these children have grown up into adolescents in the streets and are terrorising women who come for their trade in the market at dawn,” he said.

The preacher appealed to the Kisii County Government to quicken the completion of the Kiamwasi children’s home to settle, get guidance and counselling, and learn care lessons that will enable them to grow and prosper in society.

The pastor blamed adults who give the street children beer and petrol that they sniff to get drunk to soothe themselves from hunger and the fangs of cold nights, but said these drugs are harmful to them because they cause hallucinations that lead to death.

Kisii Central Ward MCA Wilfred Monyenye echoed preacher Isabokes’ sentiments, saying that unless the street children’s menace is solved in Kisii town, it will destroy traffic, businesses, and school-going children.

Monnyenye narrated an incident where they invaded his hotel at night, ate all the food, and ran away with some hotel utensils to unknown places.

“I was defeated whether I could look for them and arrest them to be arraigned in court, but my workers told me to stop,” he said.

The MCA promised to rally his colleagues and table the street children’s care agenda for debate in the Kisii County Assembly.
