KNUT leaders meet PS Raymond Omollo to discuss education and teacher welfare

The meeting centered on crucial matters related to education, governance, and leadership growth.

The leadership of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) from the 21 branches in Nyanza convened for an important meeting with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo yesterday in Kisumu.

The meeting focused on key issues concerning education, governance, and leadership development.

Omollo emphasized the importance of leadership beyond union roles, urging participants to enhance their governance, management, and public service skills.

He highlighted the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future, suggesting that many future leaders—such as members of Parliament, senators, and governors—will come from this group.

Discussions also covered progress in education under President William Ruto’s administration, including recruiting 76,000 teachers over two years.

Omollo acknowledged challenges, especially in urban centres like Nairobi, where infrastructure struggles to accommodate growing student populations.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to affirmative action and support for underserved regions.

The meeting emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the education sector and the government to address emerging challenges, ensure reforms, and promote teachers’ welfare.

Omollo committed to championing policies to enhance the teaching profession, while KNUT leaders pledged to work with the government to better education in the country.

Notable attendees included Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, MCA George Omamba, and several KNUT executive secretaries across the region.
