Secondary school principals in Machakos County have been urged to manage stress in their line of work to avoid health-related issues.
Machakos KESSHA Chair Stephen Kavuvu sounded the alarm while recalling a shocking incident in which a principal collapsed at school due to stress.
Speaking during a meeting with principals from across the county, Kavuvu emphasized that the role of a school head comes with immense responsibilities, and without proper stress management, many school heads could face burnout or worse.
“From managing staff and students to handling administrative and community expectations, the workload is overwhelming, and if you don’t take care of yourself, stress will catch up with you,” said Kavuvu.
He advised principals to delegate tasks effectively, prioritize time management, and build a strong support system within their schools to ease their workload.
He also urged them to focus on self-care, including maintaining a healthy work-life balance, exercising regularly, and engaging in stress-relief techniques such as meditation and deep breathing.

Kavuvu further encouraged principals to foster teamwork among teachers, stay organized, and address conflicts calmly to create a positive school environment.
He noted that by implementing these strategies, school heads can enhance their leadership effectiveness while safeguarding their well-being.
“Leadership is not about doing everything yourself; it’s about managing people effectively. A stressed principal cannot lead effectively,” he added.
