Parents in Elgeyo Marakwet County have been asked to take a more active role in shaping the future of their children. County Director of Education Nancy Mutai has said that many parents have neglected their responsibilities, contributing to irresponsible behaviors among students.

Mutai emphasized that students’ performance in schools is directly linked to the level of monitoring and safeguarding they receive from their parents.

“Many parents in this county have abdicated their roles, leading their children to engage in irresponsible actions. Some parents are even involved in selling illicit brews alongside their children,” Mutai said.

Speaking in Iten town, she condemned the involvement of parents in illegal activities, such as the sale of illicit brews, noting that this trend is unacceptable.

She also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that every child in the country has access to education, pointing out that capitation has been released to support schools.

“Education is a basic right, and the government is committed to ensuring no child is left behind. That is why we now have capitation to schools,” she explained.

Ms. Mutai further underscored the importance of gender equality, stressing that the boy child in the country is now at risk of being overlooked.

“All children are important and none should be discriminated against. We must ensure that all of them receive an education. However, the focus has primarily been on the girl child, leaving the boy child in a vulnerable position,” Mutai remarked.

The county’s parents have been criticized for neglecting their responsibilities, a trend that has led to children engaging in behaviors that threaten their education and future.
