Leaders and education stakeholders have called on the government to utilize skilled graduates for job creation by creating an environment that will promote job creation.
Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya, while speaking at the Lord Eroll Hotel during the graduation ceremony of Westwick Medical College, where 200 students graduated, urged the government to employ skilled graduates within the country to help boost the economy and reduce unemployment.
“I fault the government for exporting labour to other countries. For instance, I urge the government to utilize the skilled and professional labour produced by our graduates and help our country prosper. It’s wrong to export people rather than create employment,” Salasya said.
He added that even if the government decides to export 300,000 graduates, it will not address the issue of unemployment.
The MP encouraged Westwick College graduates to use the skills they have obtained to create jobs and opportunities.
Westwick College Marketing Director Rehema said the college is proud to have trained students from all over the globe.
“We intend to open more branches of our colleges across the country,” she said.
She added, “As Westwick College, we are proud to have trained several medics who will now help the country address the challenges arising from the health sector.”
Ann Maseve, a graduate, said that nursing is a calling and that she has gained the knowledge to save lives.
“My passion for being a nurse is now coupled with knowledge which I will use to save lives,” she said.
Jacky Mwangi shared that the nursing course offers many opportunities abroad, and many students pursuing the course are applying for jobs overseas.
