The Department of Physical Sciences at the University of Embu has intensified linkages with leading industries to ensure students are familiarized with in-demand skills to bridge the gap between the curriculum and the job market.
The Department Chairman, Dr. George Nyamato, explained that to enhance students’ learning experiences, they have organised field trips that expose undergraduates to real-world industrial environments.
The visits, he said, were designed to provide invaluable insights that promote learning, encourage innovation, and inspire creativity.
He said in the most recent undertakings, students pursuing degrees in Analytical Chemistry visited the National Phototherapeutics Research Centre, while Industrial Chemistry students toured United Paints Limited.
Apart from the visits to the industries, which Dr. Nyamato described as essential because they offer hands-on experiences, the department was also expanding its programmes by fostering impactful collaborations and co-supervisions.
He said the Department hosted Prof. Stephen Ojwach from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg Campus, South Africa as part of ongoing research collaborations.
“This collaboration focuses on joint postgraduate supervision, faculty exchanges, and capacity building, all of which are crucial for enhancing research within the department,” said Dr. Nyamato.

During his visit, Prof. Ojwach held sessions with students and faculty members where further avenues for collaboration to elevate research output were explored.
The lecturer assured that the department remained dedicated to establishing and maintaining industrial linkages and collaborations that are expected to enhance the quality of teaching and research.
“Through these efforts, the Department of Physical Sciences is poised to play a significant role in advancing scientific knowledge and preparing students for successful careers in various scientific fields,” he said.
