TSC urged to prioritize SNE teachers in January recruitment

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia.

Headteachers of special schools have urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to prioritize the employment of pre-vocational teachers in the recruitment exercise slated for January.

The heads reiterated that teaching and learning in pre-vocational classes 1 and 2 (equivalent to Grades 7 and 8) had been hampered by lack of teachers to handle the levels effectively.

They lamented that employment of pre-vocational teachers for stage-based learners in special schools across the country had been given a wide berth despite incessant and persistent calls from stakeholders in the sector.

The school heads said that their employment will make learning meaningful to Special Needs Education (SNE) learners, further urging TSC to create a directorate that will handle and coordinate SNE activities at the headquarters.

Their sentiments follow the pledge by the President and subsequent confirmation by TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia on the employment of 20,000 teachers in January 2025.

The news was received with lots of joy and was a relief to teachers who missed slots during the just concluded confirmation of 46,000 interns a week ago.

During the 2023 employment of interns, a spot check by Education News revealed that teachers with SNE training were left out.
