Measures are in place to assist teachers with mental health issues, TSC says

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia has said that the Commission has initiated necessary frameworks to ensure that teachers who are affected by mental health issues are given necessary support.

“Fellow teachers, mental health is a major problem among teachers in Kenya and as a Commission we have laid down measures to address the matter to ensure our teachers perform their duties effectively,” she said.

Dr. Macharia was speaking in Nakuru during World Teachers Day where she outlined the major achievements they have attained this year, which she said had improved education standards and positively impacted the quality of services offered by teachers.

In a speech read by the Commission’s Director of Legal Calvin Anyuor, Dr. Macharia said that TSC has successfully negotiated the full implementation of the 2021/2025 CBA and thanked the government for prioritizing teachers’ interests..

She noted that another achievement they made this year is the promotion of 50,856 teachers in addition to registering 40,994 teachers countrywide.

Dr. Macharia also indicated that the Commission engaged 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers.

The CEO indicated that they recently advertised 46,000 vacancies for teachers who will be employed on a permanent and pensionable basis.

Further, she added that they have retooled 52,688 teachers in the current financial year.

“The Commission has retooled 52,688 teachers in the country to equip them with skills to deliver quality teaching services,” she said.
