West Pokot Governor under fire for revoking promotion of 1,652 ECDE teachers

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin.

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin is facing scrutiny following his controversial decision to revoke the promotion of 1,652 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers to permanent and pensionable positions.

The Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Murang’a County Senator, Joe Nyutu, summoned Kachapin to the Senate where he was questioned on the legality and timing of his actions.

It was noted that the teachers had been promoted from contractual to permanent terms on July 18, 2022 by former Governor John Lonyangapuo. The County Public Service Board confirmed the promotions a day later, with the resolution set to take effect on August 1, 2022.

However, the resolution was suspended by the board on September 21, 2022, days after Kachapin was sworn in.

During the hearing, the Committee pressed Kachapin to explain his rationale for the demotion, highlighting the implications for the teachers who had been assured job security.

The governor defended his actions by citing budgetary constraints and the need for a comprehensive review of staffing policies.

Stakeholders have argued that the reversal undermines the stability of the education sector in the county and reflects poorly on his governance.

The move has raised questions regarding the management of educational resources in West Pokot, a region already grappling with challenges in the ECDE sector.

They have also said that revoking the promotions not only affects teachers’ livelihoods but also hampers efforts to improve educational standards in the county.

As the debate continues, the future of ECDE teachers in the region remains uncertain, with calls for a resolution that prioritizes both their rights and the quality of education.
