Tetu constituency registered improved performance in national examinations, coming from position 7 in 2022 to fourth place in 2023 among the 8 sub-counties of Nyeri county, MP Geoffrey Wandeto has said.

He was speaking yesterday during the second annual Tetu Education Managers Conference at Kagumo Teachers College, where education stakeholders addressed challenges and strategized on improving educational performance within the constituency.

“Last year, we addressed three main issues; improving school infrastructure, implementing a school feeding programme, and reducing fees for day secondary schools,” Wandeto said.

He noted that the Tetu Constituency Development Fund (CDF) had successfully constructed 31 out of 45 Junior Secondary School (JSS) laboratories and classrooms for Grade 7 and 8 intake.

Wandeto also acknowledged the positive feedback from constituents regarding the Chakula Moto Moto school feeding programme, which provides balanced meals for students in all public primary schools; and each parent is required to contribute Ksh20 per meal.

He also announced that fees for day secondary schools in the constituency have been reduced from Ksh5,000 to Ksh2,000 per term, thanks to a comprehensive bursary scheme supported by the CDF.

Additionally, the MP said that an affirmative action initiative has been launched to award scholarships to the best-performing students in Class 8 who wish to join local secondary schools.

This, he said, would encourage better enrollment from within the area.

The event brought together school heads, Board of Management members, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) representatives, officials from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and other educational stakeholders.
