KNUT Nandi welcomes formation of taskforce to review varsity funding model

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nandi branch has welcomed the taskforce formed to review the New Higher Education Funding model.

Tinderet/Nandi East branch Secretary Boniface Tenai lauded the selection members of the taskforce, saying they are up to the task.

Speaking while addressing the press in Kapsabet town, Tenai described the new model as discriminatory and punitive, hence should be overhauled.

He pointed out that funding is a critical issue and there was a need to ensure no student misses out on funding based on their backgrounds.

Tenai claimed the model has caused anxiety among students and parents, as many students were not sure which bands they would be put in.

He however challenged the taskforce to give all stakeholders a chance during public participation, further expressing hope the team will come up with all-inclusive recommendations.

“Funding is a crucial issue and should be above board. We also challenge the taskforce to give all stakeholders a chance to give their views on what should be done,” he said.

President William Ruto recently formed a taskforce to review the model following uproar from students and parents  the country.
