Secondary school Principals in the Western region have been urged to put up more measures to avert fire outbreaks in learning institutions.
Speaking while addressing a stakeholders meeting at St. Mary’s Sosio Girls in Kimilili constituency, Western Regional Director of Education (RDE), Jared Obiero, called on the school heads to deliberate with their boards on the most effective measures to ensure safety for learners.
“This third term is only remaining with about 35 days which are very crucial to learners, especially KCSE candidates,” he said.
Obiero noted that many schools either lack CCTV cameras and fire extinguishers or have dysfunctional ones that cannot aid investigations in case of emergencies.
He also called on Principals to embrace monitoring of students’ behavior using their peers.
Bungoma County Director of Education (CDE), Pius Ngoma, reiterated that no non-academic activities will be allowed in school to give candidates ample time to prepare for their national examinations.
Also present was Chief Officer for Department of TVET and ECDE, Sam Nalwa, who encouraged teachers to work in unison with his office to ensure timely submission of Scholarship Beneficiaries Returns whereby Ksh45 million was allocated towards the kitty to assist needy but bright students to access quality secondary education.
Nalwa acknowledged all principals who submitted their returns and called upon those who are yet to submit to do so.
