North Mugirango sub-county MP Joash Nyamoko has supported the proposal by Nairobi Woman Representative, Esther Passaris, to merge all forms of bursaries under one kitty to be disbursed through the Ministry of Education.
Nyamoko admitted that bursaries currently being disbursed through offices of the President, the Governor, the MP and the Woman rep faced a lot of challenges because they lacked proper structures and guidelines thus creating many loopholes.
He noted that bursaries were initially meant to benefit children from vulnerable backgrounds but due to corruption, undeserving students were being awarded due to political interference.
The MP said that the move will ensure more transparency and accountability.
Speaking during an interview with Education News, Nyamoko challenged his colleagues to support the move to ensure all children access education equally.
“It’s also my opinion that education in Kenya should be made free because most our parents are poor and have limited sources of getting daily income,” he added.
Nyamoko said that he supported the new university funding model, saying that it will salvage most public universities that are on the verge of collapsing due to inadequate funds.
He also called on politicians to avoid politicizing the matter.

Regarding the teachers’ strike, Nyamoko asked KUPPET officials to employ dialogue in addressing their issues instead of subjecting Kenyan children to untold suffering.
He also challenged teachers’ unions to work together as a team when addressing their issues saying that that their sharp division has resulted to the government short-changing them.
