MP appreciates KNUT for calling off planned strike

Kitutu Chache South MP Antoney Kibagendi has thanked teachers for calling off the strike that they had planned for today.

Speaking to Education News late last evening, Kibagendi said the move will allow the CS for Education Julius Ogamba enough time to settle in the new assignment.

“He has started well with the earlier release of capitation funds to schools that are reopening tomorrow (today), therefore let teachers give him easy time to work,” he said.

He was echoed by parents in the county who lauded the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) for calling off the strike and asked their Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) counterparts to follow suit.

The parents said the strike would affect students who are preparing for their national examinations and its withdrawal is timely.

“We are happy that teachers have agreed to reason with the Teachers Service Commission to iron their problems and avert the strike,” said Samuel Getange.

The announcement by KNUT to cancel the strike was made by the General Secretary Collins Oyuu, who said the government met four out of their five demands.

The announcement caused division among members of the two unions which had separately agreed on an industrial action.

However, (KUPPET) has said their members will continue with the strike and accused KNUT of betrayal.
