Public universities have begun issuing new admission letters to first-year students after President William Ruto ordered that the letters must reflect the new funding arrangement.

In a press release dated August 16 signed by Education CS Julius Migos Ogamba, it was announced that the first batch of 125,893 students who applied for loans and scholarships under the student-centered model have been sent the new letters.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) announcement comes after President Ruto directed universities on Wednesday, August 14, to issue new fee structures for first-year students, outlining the annual household contribution towards the overall cost of degree programmes.

“In line with the President’s directive, the Ministry is pleased to announce that all universities have rolled out the process of releasing new letters to all the first batch of 125,893 students who have so far applied for loans and scholarships under the student-centred model,” read the statement.

As stated in the press release, the Ministry has instructed all universities to ensure that admission letters reach first-year students by Monday, August 19.

“The Ministry has directed universities to ensure all letters have reached the First Year students by Monday, August 19th 2024,” it reads.

The press release states that, following the principles of the student-centered model, scholarships and loans have been awarded to students based on their level of need, aligning with one of the five predetermined categories.

“In accordance with the tenets of the student-centred model, students have been awarded scholarships and loans according to their level of need, consistent with any one of the five predetermined bands,” the statement further said.

According to the press release, the ministry is dedicated to ensuring that student funding is allocated fairly and equitably, addressing the legitimate needs of applicants. The ministry also emphasized that the application portal will remain open and encouraged eligible students who have not yet applied for funding to do so promptly to avoid any delays in processing their applications.

“In line with the Government‘s commitment to leaving no one behind, the application portal will remain open. The Ministry assures that all additional applications will be processed swiftly on a rolling basis. We urge eligible students who wish to receive funding and have not yet applied to do so without delay to ensure prompt processing of their applications,” reads the statement.
